Machine Learning Research Scientist

About Numenta:

At Numenta, we are at the forefront of developing powerful large language models (LLMs) that run efficiently on CPUs. We apply neuroscience principles to deep-learning systems, developing novel architectures and techniques to enable a greener future for AI. We are looking for an outstanding scientist to further our efforts in neuroscience inspired machine learning research.

Job Description:

As a Research Scientist you will be a core member of our machine learning models group, transforming innovative concepts into tangible products alongside other researchers and the product team. Prior neuroscience experience is not a requirement for this position, but you should believe that the best way to build truly intelligent machines is to leverage neuroscience-based principles. This is a full-time position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new transformer-based architectures for efficient computations.
  • Improve our neuroscience inspired machine learning algorithms.
  • Test these algorithms on benchmarks.
  • Write publications and make presentations describing the algorithms.
  • Improve our LLM training codebase.
  • Participate in designing and optimizing our code framework for large-scale training.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in computer science, machine learning, theoretical neuroscience, or a related field, or equivalent experience in industry.
  • 2+ years research and/or work experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning fields, with proven experience of designing or training LLMs
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, with hands-on experience with PyTorch in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to think outside the box, stay current with the leading edge of AI technology, create or extend novel ideas, and quickly prototype a proof of concept.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of deep-learning architectures, including transformers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including some publications.
  • Excellent algorithmic and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Exposure to deep learning frameworks other than PyTorch.
  • Experience with optimizing deep-learning architectures for efficient training and/or inference (e.g. quantization, sparsity, distillation).
  • Experience with curating datasets for training large-language models.
  • Academic research experience studying machine learning or computational neuroscience.
  • Working knowledge of Numenta’s papers and algorithms (e.g. sparse distributed representations or active dendrites).
  • Experience with cloud-based software development (preferably AWS).

What We Offer

  • A role at the forefront of the AI revolution with a company shaping the future of intelligent computing.
  • A high degree of autonomy and responsibility from the outset, with significant opportunities for professional growth.
  • The chance to work with a world-class team of scientists and engineers.
  • A vibrant startup culture that values innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
