Job description:

The Hardware Architecture Group at Numenta is looking for outstanding students or other hardware engineers for summer of 2026 internship opportunities. We are looking for candidates with expertise in hardware architectures, performance modeling, and machine learning.

The commitment is for 3 to 4 months full time (longer appointments up to one year may be possible). Numenta’s interns will participate in cutting edge machine intelligence research and development. The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills,  with hands-on experience analysing, simulating or prototyping high performance or real time systems.

The position is based in Menlo Park, CA.

  • Understand the challenges of implementing performant deep learning models.
  • Accelerate neural network architectures through biologically inspired sparse algorithms.
  • Improve your hardware engineering skills in a collaborative environment.
  • Model hardware architectures using analytical and simulation based methodologies.
  • Evaluate and tune current systems for both speed and accuracy.

Desired Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an MS or PhD program, or a recent graduate, in Computer Science and/or Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, and Verilog.
  • Some experience with virtual prototyping using SystemC or  C/C++.
  • Experience in at least one of following fields: numerical analysis, machine learning, real time games/graphics, image processing, real time computer vision, embedded systems, or data analytics with large datasets.
  • Excellent knowledge of common data structures and CPU/GPU architectures.
  • Background in math and probability theory a plus.
  • Experience with assembly, AVX or GPU programming is a plus.
  • Able to demonstrate strong intellectual capabilities and significant individual contributions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation:

This is a paid, temporary intern position. The salary ranges from $2,600 to $3,400, paid weekly. The exact salary will depend on the applicant’s academic experience. Since this is a temporary position, other benefits (medical, dental, stock options, housing or travel reimbursements, etc.) are not offered.
